Outside vs. inside
Last Thursday I ran the longest I had yet outside. I tap-tapped the asphalt in my neighborhood for 6.75 miles. From the experience, I have a few observations.
Thing 1: Running on asphalt and running on a treadmill couldn’t be more different.
Thing 2: Cheap (read: free) pedometers are worthless for running.
After the run, I felt (tired but) fine. The next morning, I felt fine. By Friday afternoon, I felt like a pro wrestler had hit me with a chair. My hips throbbed. I’d heard that street running gave the body a different sensation, but I had no idea. I spoke with a runner coworker who advised me that running outside is, indeed, an endurance test. On the plus side, he said, at least it was asphalt not concrete. Asphalt apparently has more give to it.
The pedometer obviously had less stamina than I did. After nearly 7 miles, the LED screen coldly read 3.5 miles. Which brings me to Thing 3: Google Maps has a line-drawing function with a fairly accurate distance tool. I plotted a 2.25 mile course around my neighborhood with a few mouse clicks, then did the course three times. Just to prove my pedometer wrong, I drove the route late Thursday and tracked the distance using my Saturn’s odometer. According to the Saturn, Google’s spot on. Take that, pedometer!
